GRP (Fibreglass flat roof)

  • Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) is an exceptionally durable material, the same tough composite used in the construction of boats and canoes, so it’s more than capable of standing up to the harshest Scottish weather. It’s an excellent choice for roofs that will experience foot traffic or for areas with awkward shapes where other materials would require seams, which are often the first point of failure.

    GRP is fully waterproof, making it suitable for roofing in any climate. Because it has no seams or joints, there are no weak spots where water can penetrate. It also provides the perfect opportunity to add extra insulation, helping improve your home’s energy efficiency and reduce heating costs.

    Installation begins by re‑decking the roof with specialised tongue‑and‑groove boards. The surface is then coated with fibreglass resin, followed by a layer of heavy‑duty fibreglass matting. Another coat of resin is applied, and the entire system is rolled to create a single, solid sheet with no seams whatsoever. Once cured, a coloured topcoat is applied, forming a seamless, protective finish. When installed correctly, the system is so watertight that you could line a swimming pool with it; this same method is commonly used for ponds.

    Colour options include standard grey as well as brown, green, and black. GRP roofs have been widely used for over 30 years and continue to perform exceptionally well. We’ve been installing Firestone flat roofs across Glasgow for the past five years, and they continue to impress us with their straightforward installation and clean, modern finish. The rubber membrane is particularly well‑suited to our wet climate, as it’s far less troublesome to fit compared to other systems. A Firestone roof typically has a lifespan of over 25 years.

Although the rubber surface can handle foot traffic, it isn’t quite as tough as fibreglass. A sharp object could puncture it, similar to felt, but any damage is usually simple to repair with a patch. The membrane is durable and not easily pierced, but care is still advised if the roof is being used as a balcony. For garage roofs or areas with light footfall, it’s more than strong enough.

Installation begins with a fresh deck, which is coated in adhesive before a single sheet of heavy‑duty Firestone rubber is laid into place. Once bonded, the roof is finished with a sleek black trim for a clean, professional look.

Rubber roofing is a more affordable, quicker, and easier alternative to fibreglass. However, it’s not ideal for every situation, particularly roofs with complex shapes. Fibreglass offers greater strength and rigidity, but it comes at a higher cost due to longer installation times and increased material requirements. It’s also far more challenging to install in poor weather.
